The ongoing attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran risk endangering global peace and stability.

Former Makueni governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana termed the attacks unacceptable saying that there are no different from the two-year genocidal campaign carried out in Gaza by Israel.

Speaking during a recent appearance on the NTV talk show programme, Fixing the Nation, he said the belligerent attitude showed by the United States and Israel risked escalating the conflict globally leading to further devastation, with innocent people being the most affected.

“For humanity’s sake, the bombing in Iran and what happened in Palestine where Netanyahu (Israel Prime minister) was cited at the International Criminal Court (ICC) is unacceptable. Women and children will suffer most from this conflict,” he said pointing out that over 100,000 people in Iran have been injured.

“It is unimaginable that you can expose ordinary people to this level of suffering,” he said.

Kibwana, who also served as an advisor to former President the late Mwai Kibaki, warned that the conflict, in addition to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, has the potential to escalate into a third world war.

“It is not Iran which started this war, it is Israel and the United States,” he said, calling for urgent action from the United Nations to stop the conflict.

The former governor criticised the United States’ military onslaughts, describing them as a terrible chapter in history where the country has attacked sovereign nations, causing untold suffering to ordinary people. “We have seen what they did in Afghanistan, Libya, Venezuela and now Iran,” he said.

“We need to say that it is not right to attack a country and kill civilians. There are better ways of solving problems,” he added.

The former governor also questioned why the United States chose to attack Iran over its nuclear ambitions, noting that many countries have invested in nuclear energy and that there was no justification for singling out Iran for attack.

Back home, the war has also had significant ramifications, with Kenya’s meat exports to the Middle East severely affected, while tea exports to Iran have ground to a halt due to the conflict, which is now in its 11th day. In addition, travelling to and from various countries in the gulf region have been hampered as a result of the closure of airspace in the affected countries.
