Ugandan Mufti in Mombasa for Istiqama International Conference
Dr. Mubaje is among notable speakers expected at the two-day conference scheduled from June 23 to 24, 2026.

The Mufti of Uganda, Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has arrived in Kenya ahead of the 2nd Al-Istiqamah International Conference, which is set to take place in Mombasa from June 23 to 24, 2026.
Dr. Mubaje is among notable speakers expected at the two-day conference, which will be held at the Istiqamah Academy under the theme: “The Impact of Missionary Activities and Colonialism on the Erosion of Arab Islamic Identity in the Swahili Language.”
He will present a scholarly paper titled “Linguistic Politics, Colonialism and Religion in East Africa: Uganda as a Case Study,” examining the intersection of language, faith and colonial influence in shaping East Africa’s socio-cultural landscape.
Also expected to address the gathering are Sheikh Ahmed bin Saud Al-Siyabi, Secretary-General to the Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman; Mbwarali Kame, Mombasa County Executive Committee Member for Education; and Prof. Dr. Aboud Al-Sawafi, a renowned Omani academic and philanthropist.

The conference will bring together academics, researchers, scholars and cultural experts from across the region and beyond to explore the historical, cultural and religious connections between Oman and East Africa. Discussions will focus on centuries of interaction, trade, intellectual exchange and shared heritage that have contributed to the development of the Swahili Coast and its Islamic identity.
The event is being organised by the International Istiqamah Muslim Charitable Association, a global non-profit organisation headquartered in the Sultanate of Oman. The association is actively involved in educational programmes, humanitarian initiatives and religious outreach projects across East Africa and other parts of the world.
Other partners supporting the conference include Umma University and the Technical University of Mombasa.
