In the aftermath of the devastating floods that led to the deaths of scores of people across Nairobi and left widespread devastation in their wake, a community initiative has been launched to appeal for emergency support for the victims of the deluge.

The initiative, bringing together various organizations, is calling for donations of urgent items, including clothes, food, blankets, and bedding, to be distributed to victims in the affected areas.

The organizations involved include Masjid Al Ameen, the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Practitioners, Darul Al Kheir, and the Muslim Psychologists and Counselling Association (MCPA).

“Heavy rains have devastated many families across our communities, leaving them without food, clothes, and other basic necessities. KAMMP, in collaboration with our partners, will be conducting an intensive relief collection and mobilization drive,” said a statement from the organizations.

In addition, doctors, community health workers, nurses, and counsellors have been called upon to volunteer their services and skills in the provision of medical support and psychological first aid to traumatized victims.

The drop-off point for food items, clothes, blankets, and bedding is at Al Ameen Masjid, near Juja Road Estate, Nairobi.

The heavy rains experienced last week caused widespread flooding and disruptions in various parts of the country. In Nairobi, torrential downpours overwhelmed the city's drainage infrastructure, turning busy highways into raging rivers and residential parking lots into underwater graveyards for hundreds of vehicles.

The flooding resulted in at least 40 casualties, with 26 deaths recorded in Nairobi. More than 50,000 people were displaced due to the floods.

In an advisory, authorities have warned of the heightened risk of flash floods and landslides due to saturated soils. Residents living near the Nairobi River and other water bodies have been advised to move to higher ground.
