More than 800 youths from Lamu have been ushered into the digital world following the successful completion of an intensive digital literacy training programme conducted across all 10 wards in the county.

The milestone was marked on Thursday during a colourful graduation ceremony held at the Lamu Maritime and Innovation Centre and presided over by Lamu Governor Issa Timamy.

Speaking during the event on Thursday June 11, Governor Timamy reaffirmed his administration's commitment to digitising the county and creating digital opportunities for residents. He noted that the county government has already established nine digital hubs and 28 active public Wi-Fi hotspots at strategic locations across Lamu, making it the first county in Kenya to achieve such a significant digital infrastructure milestone.

The Governor further revealed that the Department of ICT has allocated additional funding for an advanced digital training programme targeting top-performing graduates from the first cohort before the end of the year. He also announced plans to introduce digital learning at an early age by ensuring that ECDE learners are exposed to technology-assisted learning through tablets.

On his part, Lamu Deputy Governor Dr Mbarak Bahjaj urged the graduates to leverage their newly acquired skills to access income-generating opportunities available online.

County Executive Committee Member for ICT Aisha Shariff commended the youths for their dedication and commitment, noting that the high turnout demonstrated the eagerness among young people to embrace digital skills and participate in the digital economy.

Speaking at the event, Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar said the initiative was designed to equip young people with essential digital skills that will enhance their employability and enable them to access opportunities within the rapidly growing digital economy.

The training programme was implemented through a partnership between the County Department of ICT and the Technical University of Mombasa.
