Plans for the construction of the Garissa–Mandera Road have gained momentum as the government moves to strengthen transport infrastructure and unlock the economic potential of Northern Kenya through an expanded trunk road network.

A high-level consultative meeting between the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), which is expected to finance the project, was held on June 22 to review progress and discuss the next phase of implementation.

The meeting, hosted by KeNHA and led by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, brought together senior officials from both institutions to assess the project's status, evaluate key milestones achieved so far, and explore strategies to expedite its delivery.

Discussions focused on the implementation framework, project preparedness, and measures aimed at ensuring the timely completion of the strategic highway, which is expected to significantly improve mobility and accessibility across the region.

The engagement reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between KeNHA and the Saudi Fund for Development in advancing sustainable infrastructure development and supporting Kenya’s broader economic transformation agenda.

Once completed, the Garissa–Mandera Road is expected to transform transportation across Northern Kenya by enhancing regional connectivity, facilitating cross-border and domestic trade, improving access to essential services, and creating new economic opportunities for communities along the corridor.

The highway is also anticipated to stimulate investment, promote regional integration, and serve as a catalyst for socio-economic growth in counties across Northern Kenya.

The Saudi Fund for Development is a leading international development institution that provides concessional financing for critical infrastructure, energy, water, education, health, and social development projects around the world. Across Africa, the Fund has financed 458 development projects in 47 countries, underscoring its commitment to supporting sustainable development and strengthening partnerships across the continent.
